Key points
- Dialysis sessions at the destination should be booked before travel, not after arrival.
- The dialysis unit will need a recent dialysis summary and blood test results.
- Kidney function affects many treatments, so other specialists will also want recent results.
This page describes how we coordinate travel for patients with kidney conditions. It does not give medical advice. The treating nephrologist decides the care.
Records nephrology teams usually ask for
- Recent kidney function and other blood test results
- Consultation notes and the referring doctor’s letter
- For patients on dialysis: a dialysis summary from the current unit, including the prescription, schedule, access type and any recent problems
- Results of tests the dialysis unit requires before accepting a visiting patient, such as screening for blood-borne infections
- A list of current medicines
See sending medical records to hospitals in India.
Dialysis away from home
Patients on regular dialysis cannot miss sessions. Before travelling:
- book sessions at a dialysis unit near where you will stay, for every day you will need one
- send the unit the dialysis summary and test results it asks for
- plan the journey so that it falls between sessions, as advised by your nephrologist
Transplant
Some patients travel to India for a kidney transplant. Transplants are regulated by law and need approvals before they proceed. Read our organ transplant page.
Questions to ask the nephrology team
- What do you propose, and what are the alternatives?
- How should dialysis be scheduled around the treatment?
- What follow-up will the nephrologist at home need to do?
