Key points
- Arrange to be met at the airport, especially after a long flight.
- Allow at least a day of rest before the first hospital appointment where possible.
- Check visa registration requirements on arrival.
The first days in India set the tone for the whole stay. A patient who is met at the airport, reaches the accommodation without difficulty and has a clear plan for the first hospital visit starts treatment calmer and better rested.
At the airport
After immigration and baggage collection, patients are usually met in the arrivals area. If the patient needs a wheelchair, request it from the airline when booking, and tell whoever is meeting you. For patients who need medical support during the journey itself, see airline medical escort.
Keep the hospital letter, visa approval and accommodation address in your hand luggage. Immigration officers may ask about the purpose of the visit.
Getting connected
A local SIM card makes it much easier to stay in contact with the hospital and your coordinator. Foreign nationals can buy one with their passport and visa, though activation may take some time. Your accommodation’s Wi-Fi will help in the meantime.
Rest before the first appointment
Long flights are tiring, especially for someone who is unwell. Where the treatment plan allows, leave a day between arrival and the first hospital appointment.
The first hospital visit
The first visit usually involves registration, a consultation with the specialist and often some tests. Bring:
- passport and visa
- the hospital’s letter and any reference number
- all original medical records and imaging
- your medicines list
- the means to pay any deposit
The hospital’s international patient desk usually helps with registration.
Registration with the authorities
Depending on the visa type and the length of stay, foreign nationals may need to register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). Check the conditions on your visa or ask the hospital’s international desk soon after arrival.
Settling in
Find out the route and journey time between the accommodation and the hospital, where to buy food and essentials, and who to call outside hospital hours. See where to stay near the hospital and, if language is a concern, interpreters and language support.
We arrange airport meeting, transfers and accommodation as part of international patient services.
